The following graph relates pressure or gravity filtration performance in relation to water flow rate.  

Filtration performance varies inversely proportionally to water flow rate. There is no point operating any media bed filter above a velocity of 30m/hr. The optimum highest water flow rate will depends upon the media and the nature of the solids to be removed, but typically it is 20m/hr.

For drinking water applications or waste water, it is best to operate the filters below 10m/hr. For grossly contaminated water then use a flow rate below 5m/hr
